New York, NY – Allan Buchman (Artistic Director) announces that the Culture Project will present the New York premiere of the international hit AMAJUBA: Like Doves We Rise, a searing new drama of monologue, mime, song and dance from South Africa. Created and directed by the internationally acclaimed Yael Farber, AMAJUBA: Like Doves We Rise paints a very personal portrait of survival in the South African townships, with narratives based on the real lives of the five performers who make up the cast: Tshallo Chokwe, Roelf Matlala, Bongeka Mpongwana, Phillip ‘Tipo’ Tindisa and Jabulile Tshabalala. The production, a major force in post-apartheid South African theater, was a runaway sensation of the 2004 Edinburgh Festival and in London’s West End, where critics called the show “Powerful” (The Guardian), “Remarkable” (The Independent) and “Irresistible” (London Times). It also played in Ireland and Australia where the Sydney Morning Herald raved, “The most poetic, stirring and memorable theater…a passionate celebration.” AMAJUBA: Like Doves We Rise begins preview performances on Thursday, July 20, 2006 at 8:00PM. Opening Night is Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at 7:00PM at The Culture Project (45 Bleecker Street at Lafayette). This limited engagement will play through August 27, 2006.

Yael Farber is renowned for her history of testimonial-based theater, which includes the acclaimed triumvirate A Woman in Waiting, He Left Quietly, and Amajuba. According to Ms. Farber, “AMAJUBA was created as a celebration of the survival of the spirit against the exceptionally harsh environment in South Africa. The performers share their very personal experiences of growing up in the townships and surviving the consequences of apartheid. What emerges in the telling of these stories is the resilience and personal power that the average young, black South African utilizes to survive.”

AMAJUBA: Like Doves We Rise began at a small theater in Johannesburg in 2000 after Ms. Farber was invited by the North West Arts Council to create a new work with the five resident actors. Farber proposed the concept of a production in which she would work as a biographer with the performers to create a text based on the details of their childhood living in the ghettos of South Africa. The production ran in South Africa for two years before an extensive tour of the UK began in 2004.

AMAJUBA: Like Doves We Rise will play the following performance schedule at The Culture Project (45 Bleecker Street): Tuesday – Saturday at 8:00PM, Saturday & Sunday at 3:00PM. Ticket prices are $56 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster (212.307.4100 or ticketmaster.com) or in person at the Culture Project Box Office (45 Bleecker St. at Lafayette).
