– is this too soon to be doing a show about the tsunami?
Well, at least it’s not a musical. And the cast sounds good, and the director also did ‘The Fartiste’ at this year’s FringeNYC. We can’t make a joke there, because it’s just… well, it’s too soon. The production reunites playwright Chad Beckim with director John Gould Rubin (director of the The Fartiste at FringeNYC), the duo behind the critically acclaimed 2005 hit …a matter of choice.
When Lil, a damaged agoraphobe, believes she has uncovered a plot to sell a child of Tsunami-ravaged Indonesia into sex slavery by her neighbors, her husband must confront what he perceives to be her declining mental health. Next door, Keesha grapples with her husband’s addiction and the daily struggle for normalcy, further endangered by their new underaged tenant. When the women piece together the details of the transaction, they unite to save the child, their husbands and themselves from the coming storm.The production stars Michael J.X. Gladis (Dog Sees God, Signature’s Fifth of July), Mark Rosenthal (Marvin’s Room, After Ashley), Quincy Tyler Bernstine (The Civilian’s Nobody’s Lunch, Matt & Ben), Alfredo Narciso (Roundabout’s A Streetcar Named Desire with Natasha Richardson, Dead City) and Eva Kaminsky (The Safety Net, The Syringa Tree national tour).
John Gould Rubin is a member of the LAByrinth Theater Company for which he produced Our Lady of 121st St. and Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train. His directing credits include The Fartiste (winner of Best Musical at FringeNYC 2006), Ma-Yi’s Trial By Water, STopless by David Deblinger, The Trail of Her Inner Thigh by Erin Cressida Wilson, John Patrick Shanley’s A Winter Party and The Erotica Project (which he co-created). He is also the author of The Predators’ Ball, which premiered at BAM in 1996.
‘NAMI is the second full length play by Chad Beckim. As an actor he has appeared in numerous productions including American Ma(u)l at The Culture Project, Benten Kozo at The Flea, and Play at The Kraine. He holds a BFA from Utica College of Syracuse University.
