Who says theater’s not cool? (Okay, lots of people, but they’re not always right.) The Hip Hop Theater Festival is back with more theater that doesn’t look like the stuff your Gramma likes (unless she’s a rappin’ Granny). Read on:

John Lloyd Young

John Lloyd YoungThe guy won a Tony, but apparently he is a veteran of downtown theater. Anyone who’s appeared in a show at Expanded Arts deserves props for (a) surviving the experience and (b) getting out and making some money. Nothing personal, EA, it’s just… well, things could get a little scary down there sometimes. Good for John, though. This isn’t quite as cool as Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis winning the Tony for Urinetown, but it’s still good. Nice work, John.

RIVER DEEP, A TRIBUTE TO TINA TURNER

Even if you don’t usually like this kind of show, how can you not love Tina Turner? Full disclosure: we haven’t seen it, but it sounds fun. Read on:

Announcement of Limited Off-Broadway Return Engagement:

“A delightful abundance of shimmying, strutting hips; one would be hard pressed to find a more compelling argument for the pleasures of freedom, especially freedom as hard-won as Ms. Turner’s.”
– The New York Times

“A fresh look on a well-known subject where the ultimate message is about the resiliency of the human spirit.”
– The New York Sun

DIE MOMMIE DIE!

This isn’t off-off Broadway, but the title is funny and some of the artists involved started there (Charles Busch, for example). And Jenn Harris was in Silence! The Musical, as in Silence of the Lambs, but a musical. That’s about as off-off as it gets. And it’s a benefit for The Actor’s Fund, who offer services and support for entertainment industry folks (click here to learn more). Expensive of course, but you can write most of it off.
