“A delightful abundance of shimmying, strutting hips; one would be hard pressed to find a more compelling argument for the pleasures of freedom, especially freedom as hard-won as Ms. Turner’s.”
– The New York Times

“A fresh look on a well-known subject where the ultimate message is about the resiliency of the human spirit.”
– The New York Sun

$ellout – That’s What We’re Here For

The Brick Theater, Inc.
presents
a Gemini CollisionWorks production

That’s What We’re Here For (an american pageant)

written, designed, and directed by Ian W. Hill

as part of The $ellout Festival

With That’s What We’re Here For (an american pageant), noted NYC
independent theatre creator and artsy curmudgeon Ian W. Hill joins the
spirit of the $ellout Festival by creating a peppy original (and
sincere, really!) patrotic revue focusing on the history of America
from 1945 to now. A celebration of freedom. A 1970s TV variety show.
A collision of art, industry, irony, and wide-eyed musical numbers.
Robert Wilson meets Up With People. An original play about America,
Money, and God is in there underneath it all, but that’s not important
if you just want to listen to the pretty songs and look at the pretty
pictures . . .

Next Generation Playwriting Contest

Some readings from the good folks at Reverie Productions. The last two plays to come out of their contest were good: HAVANA BOURGEOIS and PING PONG DIPLOMACY.

Here’s the latest batch (text from their email newsletter):
We’ve got a guy who tatoos advertising on his forehead (Billboard), a funny twist on war profiteering (Your Army), A tour guide imprisoned for burning down his place of employment (Guided Tour), an unwitting moment of racial violence (Luck), and an isolated matriarcal society in the hills of New Jersey (Humans Remain). In other words – fun for the whole family.

All Readings will take place in the Bruce Mitchell Room

at the ART/New York Spaces at 520 8th Avenue (at 36th St) on the 3rd floor.

Admission: Pay What You Can
Reservations and Info: http://www.reverieproductions.org/contest-readings.htm

Sarah Bernhardt Solo Show

Mindy Nirenstein Channels the Spirit of Sarah Bernhardt in the Solo Show
I, SARAH – For Three Performances Only This Month!
“Nirenstein creates a fascinating portrayal of the shrewd, eccentric and sublimely romantic Madame Bernhardt…I, Sarah provides a wealth of information about the life and career of Bernhardt, as well as revealing the political events of the era”. (The Register-Guard)

After a series of sold-out regional productions Mindy Nirenstein brings Robert W. Cabell’s acclaimed one-woman show I, SARAH, to New York for three performances only to launch a national tour. Portraying “The Divine Sarah Bernhardt,” (a title bestowed by Oscar Wilde), Nirenstein presents a warts-and-all look at the woman who was the greatest actress of her generation and, to many, the greatest of all time. Written by Robert W. Cabell and directed by Joe Zingo, the show will be performed at the Where Eagles Dare Theatre, located at 347 West 36th Street, from June 22nd – June 24th.
