Who says theater’s not cool? (Okay, lots of people, but they’re not always right.) The Hip Hop Theater Festival is back with more theater that doesn’t look like the stuff your Gramma likes (unless she’s a rappin’ Granny). Read on:

John Lloyd Young
The guy won a Tony, but apparently he is a veteran of downtown theater. Anyone who’s appeared in a show at Expanded Arts deserves props for (a) surviving the experience and (b) getting out and making some money. Nothing personal, EA, it’s just… well, things could get a little scary down there sometimes. Good for John, though. This isn’t quite as cool as Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis winning the Tony for Urinetown, but it’s still good. Nice work, John.

“A delightful abundance of shimmying, strutting hips; one would be hard pressed to find a more compelling argument for the pleasures of freedom, especially freedom as hard-won as Ms. Turner’s.â€
– The New York Times
“A fresh look on a well-known subject where the ultimate message is about the resiliency of the human spirit.â€

DIE MOMMIE DIE!
This isn’t off-off Broadway, but the title is funny and some of the artists involved started there (Charles Busch, for example). And Jenn Harris was in Silence! The Musical, as in Silence of the Lambs, but a musical. That’s about as off-off as it gets. And it’s a benefit for The Actor’s Fund, who offer services and support for entertainment industry folks (click here to learn more). Expensive of course, but you can write most of it off.

$ellout – That’s What We’re Here For
The Brick Theater, Inc.
presents
a Gemini CollisionWorks production
That’s What We’re Here For (an american pageant)
written, designed, and directed by Ian W. Hill
as part of The $ellout Festival
With That’s What We’re Here For (an american pageant), noted NYC
independent theatre creator and artsy curmudgeon Ian W. Hill joins the
spirit of the $ellout Festival by creating a peppy original (and
sincere, really!) patrotic revue focusing on the history of America
from 1945 to now. A celebration of freedom. A 1970s TV variety show.
A collision of art, industry, irony, and wide-eyed musical numbers.
Robert Wilson meets Up With People. An original play about America,
Money, and God is in there underneath it all, but that’s not important
if you just want to listen to the pretty songs and look at the pretty
pictures . . .

THE TEMPEST and AS YOU LIKE IT
A summer New York institution, Shakespeare in the Park(ing) Lot, where performers present works by the Bard free of charge, while competing with the various sounds of the city (including a passing garbage truck), will return this July with two of Bard’s most popular works, THE TEMPEST and AS YOU LIKE IT.
