Altar Boyz beat Satan

Altar Boyz
OK, sometimes we’re obnoxious, but we like to give credit where its due. This is kinda funny:

Ken Davenport and Robyn Goodman, in association with Walt Grossman, Ruth Hendel, Sharon Karmazin, Matt Murphy and Mark Shacket, proudly announce that Tuesday October 3rd was the 666th performance. Passing that means the Boyz have beaten the Devil and can continue their ‘soul saving’ in New York while embarking on a Nation-wide Tour as well.

That’s amusing, it promotes the show, and even, in a strange way, will probably even appeal to the religiously inclined. If nothing else, it’s an amusing thing, and probably a first (celebrating the 666th performance, that is). Bravo!

Canadian Theatres Remember 9/11 With Performances Benefitting Firefighter Charities

The Guys: A Play
…while NYC Theaters do, um, nothing.
That said, maybe this makes sense. 9/11 is a very tough topic for New Yorkers to handle, for obvious reasons. In many ways, we don’t really want to remember it. And The Guys did start out here, at the Flea Theater. And to be fair, it is entirely possible that there are theatrical 9/11-themed events going on in the Big Apple that we know nothing about. Down and dirty reporting is not our strong suit.

John C. See Ya Later

Well, that was fast. John C. Reilly was going to be in a show at PS 122, but now he is not. Bummer. Reason given is “scheduling conflict”. If it were someone else, we might not buy it, but John seems like a good guy, so we do. Not that we know the guy, it’s just our impression that he’s not a tool.
Aside #1: isn’t it interesting how we form opinions of actors based on their on and off-screen demeanors? For example, Meryl Streep seems like a very cool lady. Hugh Grant seems like a prick. Having never met either of them for even a nanosecond, what the hell do we know? But there you are.
New press release for the show John’s leaving (boo-hoo), which is called TALE OF 2CITIES and is written by Heather Woodbury, is below.
Aside #2: This might actually be a good thing for the author of the play. Granted, it’s nice to have a big star in your play, but then everything becomes about the star. With a new play, that’s not necessarily what you want, especially if you happen to be the author of that new play.

‘Awesome 80’s Prom’ Wins ITA Award

Awesome 80's Prom
What is the ITA Award, you ask? The Improvisational Theater Association, you dummy.
Look, any show that makes theater out of Brat Pack-era stuff is okay by us. And what they (the ITA) say makes sense: “The ITA created these awards in celebration of the unique form of interactive or ‘reality theater’ that has been a part of the legitimate theatrical landscape for decades and has produced some of the longest running shows in New York City and around the world, including Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding, The Donkey Show, De La Guarda, and The Awesome 80s Prom. Despite the length and success of these runs, prior to the ITA, there has never been an organization that has recognized and honored the achievements of these unique productions.” And besides, if the film industry can have a separate award for every film that gets made, why can’t the thee-tah add a few more statues to the industry’s mantle?

RICHARD PRYOR, JR., MAKES NY THEATRICAL DEBUT

Filed under: Favorite Show Titles,Listings,News,Press Releases — offoffbway @ 10:20 pm

Richard Pryor Jr
The namesake of one of the greatest comedians of all time will make his NYC Theatrical Debut… in a show called BEST LITTLE CRACKHOUSE IN PHILLY (photo below is from the show). As the description says “Pretty Woman meets Best Little Whorehouse — and gives new meaning to hoedown!”. Hey, everyone’s got to start somewhere. We love it when celebrities, and even celebrity offspring, do off-off theater. Makes us proud.
Lots more events happening at Downeast Arts Center including something called “THE INTERNATIONAL CRINGE FESTIVAL” (love that name!); see below for the full press release or visit NYArtists.org.

Broadway Dancer Fired for Enormous Breasts

Alice Alyse
Again, this should be the title of a FringeFest show. Basically, the woman was cast in a touring production of Movin’ Out, the musical based on Billy Joel songs. Then her breasts got too big and they fired her. Considering the fact that Twyla Tharp “fired…the show’s assistant director and choreographer after Tharp learned the news” that his wife (also in the show) was pregnant (source), it seems pretty believable that excessive cleavage might’ve been the reason for this dancer’s firing. Not that we know. Just a guess. More pictures by following the link below.

If only the publicist had been there…

…maybe Axl wouldn’t have sunk his teeth into a security guard.

Axl Rose to pay guard he allegedly bit

“Catarina Oscarsson, a spokeswoman for concert organizer Ema Telstar, said the band wasn’t traveling with a publicist and would not comment on the arrest.”

Usually the publicist is to blame, so this time it’s nice to see them get credit. Sort of.
